Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming three brilliant students from Sandymoor Ormiston Academy to FCE Projects for a week of work experience. Gabe and Nathan joined us for a hands-on introduction to civil engineering, while Izzie explored the world of marketing and communications.

From day one, Gabe and Nathan immersed themselves in real-world engineering challenges. One of their standout achievements was building an app focused on monitoring mental health and wellbeing in the workplace – a project that not only showcased their creativity and technical ability but also aligned closely with the Good Health and Wellbeing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3).

Their week was full of site visits, team meets, and even a surprise maths challenge from our Managing Director, Ian. What stood out most was Nathan’s reflection that, although he initially lacked confidence in maths, learning how to think like a civil engineer gave him a new perspective and helped him rise to the challenge.

Meanwhile, Izzie spent her week with our marketing and communications team, learning about visual storytelling, composition, and the power of clear marketing messaging. She even accompanied our ESG Director, Dr. Tim Whitehill to a roundtable event in Wrexham, where she put her skills to the test, filming and editing a one-minute story-led video of the event. She also created a highlights reel of her week, which we’ll proudly share on our social media pages.

The week concluded with a fantastic joint presentation from Gabe, Nathan, and Izzie to our Managing Directors and marketing team. They shared their key learnings, favourite experiences, and gave a live demo of the app and watched Izzie’s videos. We were especially impressed by the boys’ thoughtful inclusion of the SDGs in their presentation, showing a clear understanding of how the workplace can support global wellbeing.

Ahead of the Global Goals ‘International Youth Day” (12th August), our marketing team conducted a quick video interview with the students to summarise their experience with us. When asked if they would recommend work experience at FCE Projects, all three responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!” praising the friendly environment, the depth of learning, and the opportunity to get stuck into real work.

A huge well done to Gabe, Nathan, and Izzie, it’s been a real pleasure having you with us!
